Question Six - Motocross to Cycling

05 March 2010

Gavin Moore from England has asked Simon about making the switch from Motocross to Cycling.

When I was 15 I got seriously injured from racing motocross and had to have a knee reconstruction. After 12 months rehabilitation I was back on my motorbike fooling around in the yard when I fell off injuring my knee again. This time it was very serious and was apparent that my motocross days were over.

I didn’t really have one main object to overcome in making the transition. My doctor recommended I take up cycling as a form of rehab for my knee, so at the time it was more out of necessity than a choice. Phil Anderson had the farm next door and helped me out with some training advice, which got me started.

There were some other challenges with switching from a motorbike to a road bike. For instance when I first moved to Italy and started racing for European teams, I was forced to swap my break levers around to the Euro style left hand front break! It took a few months and many crashes later until I got used to it.

When I started out cycling I didn’t really think about making it as a professional straight away. My first goal was to race the local club race, and then once I achieved that I focused on racing at state level then national level etc. I just tried to look one step ahead until I had make it onto an amateur team in Italy and I started to dream of racing as a professional.
